Tom Dunstan “2009 Season”

“The talent is there, we must hope that funding will ensure it’s not wasted”

In 2009, Tom drove a Ginetta G50 for Team GCR in GT4 races in UK and Europe. In his first season of FIA European Cup GT4 racing he has already achieved a second place at the tricky Zolder track in Belgium.

Tom also ran the Ginetta in occasional rounds of the G50 Cup in UK.

Tom put in some stirring drives right from the start of the season. He netted a fighting 5th place at Brands Hatch in the G50 Cup on 5 April and over the May Bank Holiday weekend, partnered by driver Matt Hamilton, a creditable 5th place in their debut in GT4 racing.

Following this encouraging start to the season the whole team worked hard to gather sufficient funding to allow them to make the trip to Adria in Italy for the second round of the European GT championship.

“We knew we could only confirm our entry for Adria at the last minute when the funds were in place” said Tom Dunstan, “So it was all a bit of a scramble including a dash across Europe in the truck to make sure we actually got there on time with very little time to set the car up. Nevertheless, the first race went reasonably well for us with a 5th place, despite some handling problems. But the second race was a nightmare - I was much more confident that we had everything in great order and then somebody triggered a major pile-up at the very first corner and I was taken off the track and out of the race. We were desperately unlucky and I know we have no alternative but to smile and say that’s motor racing for you - but I was unhappy that I didn’t get the chance to show what a great job the whole team had done”

Following their torrid participation in the race at Adria, Team GCR reiterated their resolve to maintain their presence in European GT4 racing with an appearance in Germany, at Oschersleben. Team Principal, Mark Stokes upbeat assessment was “we will have the car to do it, once we’ve worked on our rather battered Ginetta G50 and we have in Tom Dunstan the best young driver in the championship. Our greatest task is to secure the necessary level of funding from sponsors to ensure we can exploit the opportunity next month” Unfortunately the team’s ambitions were thwarted by the unexpected need for Tom to undergo an operation for severe tonsillitis. Despite the problems with his throat Tom was able to say that “ although I’m obviously disappointed to be missing the German round of the championship I’ll soon be fighting fit and ready to give it my all for the rest of the season.” Returning to fitness Tom partnered current championship leader, Joe Osborne for the following round at Spa in July. The couple, driving the Team GCR Ginetta G50, secured a 4th place in the first race, despite a spin in very slippy conditions and were frustrated to capture only 7th place in race two.

Team Principal, Robin Sherwood commented, “We have some work to do on the car before the next race at Zolder in August but our drivers did a great job at Spa” Tom Dunstan echoed those sentiments and keenly anticipating the final two rounds of the season commented, “Our weekend at Spa was reasonably successful but for the next races in Belgium and Portugal we can’t just go for reasonable results we need to really go for it”.

And go for it at Zolder, he did. After a retirement in the first race of the weekend, due to a broken drive shaft, Tom in the second race, powered to an amazing second place finish. So, in only his fourth round of an FIA GT Championship, he had netted a podium position in a race driven by many of the world’s top GT drivers.

Tom was jubilant, ‘the race was fantastic! We didn’t decide we could afford to come here till last Saturday. Everyone has worked non-stop to bring it all together. It really is a team effort and it was a brilliant one” Team Principal, Robin Sherwood was, unsurprisingly, equally ecstatic but also keen to stress that there is more work still to do, “For Tom to get on the podium, in his first season’s FIA GT racing with Team GCR, is remarkable. He hadn’t even seen the circuit, let alone driven it, until we got here this weekend.” But he was also keen to stress that all the hard work must continue, “Our prime focus now is on raising sufficient money to see us in great shape for 2010.

We are determined to give Tom another chance to shine”
